Gastroenteritis is one of those words we do not hear particularly often, but many of us have experienced. The term describes any number of conditions that result in a swollen and inflamed digestive tract as well as vomiting and diarrhea, caused by a viral or bacterial infection. These types of conditions are entirely treatable but still affect millions of people yearly. Statistically, diarrheal illnesses are the second leading cause of death of children under the age of five around the world. Because these conditions are so prevalent, researchers are seeking new information about what causes them and what increases the risk of their developing. In a new study, researchers found that the weather can impact the risk of contracting gastroenteritis. In the past, there has been an association found between increased rates of infection and heavy rainfall as well as heat. The research was based out of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and took over 17 years to complete. By analyz...

Conflicts of interest pervasive among clinical guideline authors

Despite clear policies from the National Academy of Medicine to limit industry influence on clinical guidelines, financial conflicts of interest (COI) persist among authors, two new studies found. Advertisement "Physicians should be aware that self-reported disclosures regarding conflicts of interest among authors of clinical practice guidelines may be inaccurate," Dr. Samir C. Grover from Saint Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto told Reuters Health by email. "The impact of this on the recommendations contained within clinical practice guidelines is uncertain." Previous research has shown that guidelines rarely adhere to National Academy of Medicine policies and that authors may have undeclared financial COI. In the first study, Dr. Grover and colleagues identified the top 10 revenue medications of 2016 and assessed the adherence of 18 related clinical guidelines to three National Academy of Medicine standards: written disclosure of potentia...

On-demand sildenafil outperforms placebo in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon, but the differences are not likely to be clinically relevant, according to a series of n-of-1 trials. Advertisement "Most treatments tested in Raynaud have shown moderate (if any) efficacy, and this is principally due to important heterogeneity," said Dr. Matthieu Roustit of Universite Grenoble Alpes and Grenoble Alpes Hospital, in Grenoble, France. "The n-of-1 approach seems particularly relevant in this situation to see whether a given patient will benefit from the treatment. On-demand sildenafil could be an option in patients who are not willing to take daily medication," he told Reuters Health by email. Dr. Roustit and colleagues estimated the efficacy of on-demand sildenafil in treating moderate to severe primary or secondary Raynaud's phenomenon through a series of up to five crossover treatment blocks (sildenafil 40 mg, sildenafil 80 mg, and placebo) in 38 patients ...

Roughly half of all gastroenterology guideline authors reported no industry relationships but authors suggested more guidance necessary, according to a research letter published in JAMA Internal Medicine . Tyler R. Combs, BS, of the Center for Health Sciences at Oklahoma State University, and colleagues said a difference in self-reported conflicts and conflicts recorded in a public payments database might suggest a need for more guidance for these authors. “Our investigation sought to understand and characterize the extent of relationships between authors of [clinical practice guidelines] in gastroenterology and their efforts to disclose those relationships to relevant stakeholders,” they wrote. Per the researchers, the Institute of Medicine recommends that guideline development teams not include more than 50% authors who have financial relationships to disclose and further recommends that authors refrain from financial conflicts for 1 year following publication. While past studi...

Heat increases the number of gastroenteritis-related hospital admissions by 21%, while cold increases them by 7%. A new study performed by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), an institution supported by "la Caixa" Foundation, analysed for the first time the association between climate and hospitalisations due to the infection over a 17 year-period in Spain. Diarrheal diseases, although preventable and treatable, are the second leading global cause of death among children under five years of age. In 2015, 1,31 million people worldwide died from gastroenteritis. To date, few studies have addressed the association between climate factors- temperature and rain- and gastrointestinal disease incidence in high-income countries. In most cases, heat and heavy rainfall were associated with an increase in infections. The aim of this study, published in Environment International , was to evaluate the association between meteorological variables and gastroenteritis ...

According to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, more than 750,000 Americans have Crohn's disease, and of those, up to 75 percent will eventually require surgery. Surgery in Crohn's disease is not curative, and postoperative recurrence frequently occurs. 1 "Today, there are no approved treatments in the United States for the prevention of postoperative Crohn's disease recurrence. Based on existing clinical data, we believe rifaximin may be a potential treatment solution to help postoperative patients manage their Crohn's disease," said Mark McKenna , president of Salix Pharmaceuticals. "The amended agreement with Alfasigma allows us to start working together on a clinical research program that could lead to a new option in the treatment paradigm for postoperative Crohn's disease patients." The new formulation of rifaximin, called Extended Intestinal Release (EIR), will be used in the late-stage clinical research program. In 2012, a E...

Viral gastroenteritis is a contiguous infection. It is also known as stomach flu. It is an intestinal infection marked by inflammation of the mucus membranes of the gastrointestinal tract i.e. the stomach, the large intestine, and the small intestine. Around 20 different types of viruses can cause gastroenteritis. As there is no cure for viral gastroenteritis, prevention is the only way to avoid the infection. Signs and symptoms of viral gastroenteritis include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramp, watery non-bloody diarrhea, muscle ache or headache, and low-grade fever. The window period for symptoms after the infection ranges from one to three days. Viral gastroenteritis can affect all age groups. Children are more prone to viral gastroenteritis and they account for 70% of the cases reported. Viral gastroenteritis can be diagnosed by using the standard serological stool test or nucleic acid testing. Nucleic acid testing-based diagnosis is a rapid and sensitive method used for the diag...
