Tiny Plastic Pieces Are Finding Their Way To Your Stomach, Study Finds

Image
It is an unfortunate reality that plastics have contaminated our environment to a great degree. Now, in the first study of its kind, researchers from Austria have discovered the presence of microplastics in human poop as well. Microplastics refer to tiny particles of plastic, ranging from 10 nanometers to 5 millimeters in diameter. In other words, they could be small enough to be invisible to the naked eye. The new findings suggest that we may be involuntarily ingesting these plastics, the consequence of which remains unclear for now.  The Medical University of Vienna and the Environment Agency Austria recruited a small group of participants from around the world. The group comprised of eight healthy individuals from Finland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Austria. They were monitored with the help of food logs which revealed what they were eating during the week before their stool samples were collected. While only six of them...

Until now most research has focused on the natural world, but the new study shows that humans are also consuming plastic, with some pieces potentially lodging in our bodies. Scroll down for video  Researchers spoke last night of their surprise at finding so many particles in the human samples. They suggested sources could include the eating of fish or drinking of water from plastic bottles. Plastic is in everything, from beer to table salt  It has become virtually impossible to escape eating plastic, but its health implications are largely unknown. Microplastics have been found in all forms of marine life, in table salt, honey, sugar, beer, organic fertilizers, in the dust in our homes, and in samples of bottled and tap water. Chemical...

If there's deer, ticks and fleas are along for the ride

Image
Lyme disease in our area is on the rise. Lyme disease is the most common tick transmitted disease. Lyme disease can lead to a lifetime of chronic arthritis and kidney failure more common in dogs. At the Dunkirk Animal Clinic a simple blood sample is taken to see if your pet has developed antibodies to Lyme disease and other tick born diseases. There are many misconceptions that I have heard in the general public when it comes to ticks and Lyme disease. I am going to discuss a few below: 1. My dog isn’t in the woods, therefore they will not get Lyme disease. Ticks can be picked up even in your backyard. The resident white-tail deer population has increased in our small towns. If you have deer coming through your backyard, then you have ticks in your backyard. Ticks will hang out on weeds and grasses waiting for their next host to come along. They will drop onto the pet to get their next meal. The Ixodes black legged deer tick is the deer tick that can transmit Lyme disease. Other t...
