The Houston Humane Society explains which foods are actually OK to share and which should be considered forbidden for the sake of the animal's health: DOGS AND CATS CAN ENJOY THESE TREATS: Carrots Apples White rice Fried egg with no seasoning “Turkey or chicken in very small doses but you need to make sure there's no skin, no seasoning, very bland, cooked all the way through, no grease,” Monica Schmidt from Houston Humane Society said. An article shared 72,000 times on Facebook says courts have admitted that “vaccines do in fact cause autism”. The claim is false; a US court did award compensation to children who fell ill after vaccinations, but from brain injury and not from autism. The article by Alternative News Network dates from May 29, 2017 and has been shared thousands of times on Facebook pages including ‘Illuminati Exposed (This is the resistance)’, which has more than one million followers. A screenshot taken on February 26, 2019 of the misleading article The article headlined ‘Courts quietly confirm MMR vaccine causes autism’ says: “courts, governments and vaccine manufacturers have quietly conceded the fact that the Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine most likely does cause autism and stomach diseases”. It repeats claims published in a 2013 article by The Liberty Beacon website. A second article citing The Liberty Beacon is also circulating in French. “Pharmaceutical companie...

Left-handed boxers win more fights, research shows - WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando

(CNN) - Left-handed people are better in combat than their right-handed counterparts, according to new research -- something that may help to explain the continued existence of the trait. Around 10% of the population is left-handed, and research has linked the preference to higher rates of breast cancer, bowel problems such as Crohn's disease, and schizophrenia. Given the costs of left-handedness you might expect the trait to have disappeared as humans evolved, but there is an interesting explanation. According to the "fighting hypothesis," right-handed people are more used to fighting fellow right-handers due to the relative rarity of left-handed people. As a result, left-handed people, also known as southpaws, have a competitive advantage in combat because their opponents are likely to be disoriented by their fighting stance. During more violent eras in human history this meant that left-handed people would have been dominant in physical confrontation and there...

The direct effectiveness of infant rotavirus vaccination implemented in 2006 in the United States has been evaluated extensively, however, understanding of population-level vaccine effectiveness (VE) is still incomplete. Baker, et al. (2019) analyzed time series data on rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE) and all-cause acute gastroenteritis (AGE) hospitalization rates in the United States from the MarketScan® Research Databases for July 2001–June 2016. Individuals were grouped into ages 0–4, 5–9, 10–14, 15–24, 25–44, and 45–64 years. Negative binomial regression models were fitted to monthly RVGE and AGE data to estimate the direct, indirect, overall, and total VE. A total of 9,211 RVGE and 726,528 AGE hospitalizations were analyzed. Children 0-4 years of age had the largest declines in RVGE hospitalizations with direct VE of 87% (95% CI: 83, 90%). Substantial indirect effects were observed across age groups and generally declined in each older group. Overall VE against RVGE hospitali...
