Amid political and regulatory uncertainty, the fundamental needs of the health-care system remain unchanged: Providers have to deliver high-quality care to more patients in a more cost-effective manner. Advertisement There's been downward pressure on reimbursement, and as providers look for performance gains across the enterprise, compensation leaps out. It's the biggest line-item expense for providers, representing 50% to 70% of operating costs. A new survey from ECG Management Consultants shows a potential opportunity, as median primary care physician compensation was flat this year compared to 2017, while specialists experienced a 2% increase. IMPACT If physician compensation were to increase, it would be an indication that an organization is focused more on clinical quality than on volume, which is what will ultimately be beneficial for providers, given that the move to value-based care emphasizes quality over quantity. Abrilumab induces remission, healing in moderate to severe UC - Healio

Image
William J. Sandborn Abrilumab, an anti-alpha-4 beta-7 antibody, helped induce remission, clinical response and mucosal healing in patients with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis, according to research published in Gastroenterology . William J. Sandborn, MD, director of the University of California San Diego Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, and colleagues wrote that many patients with UC fail to achieve remission on conventional therapy and eventually require colectomy . Abrilumab could fill a significant unmet need for these patients. “Selective targeting of gut lymphocyte trafficking by inhibiting the [alpha-4 beta-7] pathway was achieved in patients with UC and Crohn’s disease with intravenously administered vedolizumab (Entyvio, Takeda), approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for induction and maintenance therapy in both indications,” they wrote. “Therefore, targeting gut selective lymphocyte trafficking is a promising therapeutic strategy in IBD.” ...

Combating rising tide of plastic waste

Image
Combating rising tide of plastic waste Rawalpindi city has been flooded many times over the last two decades. The main reason for the flooding was cited to be the indiscriminate use of plastic bags. Manufacturers promptly pass increase in packaging costs onto the unaware customers. But the city's insatiable appetite for plastic bags, combined with a poor track record of civic sense among its residents, severely hampers their efforts, especially during the monsoon months,” says Jafar Hussain from Faisal Colony. “How long will this throbbing city have to fight off floods in its streets? Nobody knows, for sure. Plastic has become a major scourge for the city, clogging vital roads during the seasonal downpours and regularly turning major thoroughfares and service...
