Cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption and SSPs association | Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology - MD Linx
Using a screening colonoscopy database of 13,618 asymptomatic subjects, 30–49 years old, and 17,999 subjects, 50–75 years old, a cross-sectional study was performed to examine the prevalence of sessile serrated polyps (SSPs) and the relationship between SSP risk and modifiable lifestyle factors in asymptomatic young adults. In an analysis of a colonoscopy screening database, they found that smoking and alcohol consumption were related to any SSPs and large SSPs in asymptomatic young adults. Five years of cessation of smoking reduced the risk of SSPs and large SSPs. For the primary prevention of SSPs in young adults, early lifestyle changes might, therefore, be suggested.
