Becker's ASC Review featured 12 GI physicians this month:
1. Spencer Dorn, MD, is the vice chief of gastroenterology at Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina Health. In 2005, Dr. Dorn joined UNC's Center for Functional GI Disorders, where he works to improve patient experience and care. He is also an associate professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina. His research focuses on GI disorders and health services.
2. Molly C. Dienhart, MD, is co-director of the intestinal support service at Columbus, Ohio-based Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Deinhart is an attending physician in the hospital's division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. Her clinical interests include treating children with intestinal failure.
3. Rohit Kohli, MBBS, is chief of the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Kohli is a professor of pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He researches diabetes and obesity and is a recipient of the 2007 George Ferry Young Investigator Award from the Children's Digestive Health and Nutrition Foundation.
4. Francisco Sylvester, MD, is chief of the pediatric gastroenterology division at Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina Children's Hospital. Dr. Sylvester treats more than 400 children with inflammatory bowel disease and researches how intestinal inflammation affects the skeleton growth of children. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Sylvester is medical director of UNC Health Care children's outpatient clinics.
5. Thomas J. Sferra, MD, is the pediatric gastroenterology chief of Cleveland-based University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Dr. Sferra serves as the Martin and Betty Rosskamm chair in pediatric gastroenterology at the hospital and is also the pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition chief at Cleveland Medical Center.
6. Bashar Attar, MD, PhD, is the systemwide chairman of gastroenterology and hepatology for the Cook County Health System in Illinois, as well as the director for the system's GI fellowship program. Dr. Attar practices at Chicago-based John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Dr. Attar's clinical expertise includes treating pancreatic and biliary disorders, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
7. Giancarlo Mercogliano, MD, is chief of gastroenterology at Philadelphia-based Main Line Health System. For 14 years, Dr. Mercogliano was director of the gastroenterology fellowship program at Wynnewood, Pa.-based Lankenau Medical Center. He is also an associate clinical professor of medicine for Jefferson University Medical School.
8. Ronnie Fass, MD, is the gastroenterology division director of Cleveland-based MetroHealth System. Dr. Fass is a recipient of the Janssen Award for Digestive Sciences in Clinical or Basic Research. He's also the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and serves as a reviewer for other scientific journals.
9. Arkady Broder, MD, is the director of endoscopy at New Brunswick, N.J.-based St. Peter's Healthcare System. Dr. Broder also is associate director of the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School gastroenterology fellowship program at St. Peter's University Hospital and a member of the clinical faculty at Newark-based Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
10. Patricia Wong, MD, is assistant gastroenterology program director and director of women's gastrointestinal health at Philadelphia-based Main Line Health. Before joining Main Line Health, Dr. Wong was an assistant professor of medicine and an associate fellowship program director at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and director of the GI clinic at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
11. Bryan G. Sauer, MD, is director of endoscopy at Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Health System. Dr. Sauer helped launch the university's adult eosinophilic esophagitis clinic and participates in quality and efficiency research in endoscopy. This year, he led a medical mission to provide endoscopy care in Santiago, Guatemala.
12. Harvey B. Lefton, MD, is chief of gastroenterology at Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health Torresdale Hospital. Dr. Lefton is also president of the Philadelphia County Medical Society and a past president of the Pennsylvania Society of Gastroenterology.
