Donate to help a litter of sick Colorado puppies! - KKTV 11 News
PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is calling on dog lovers to help a litter of sick puppies.
Sally, Sam, Skyler, Shayne, Shannen, Shay, Schuyler and Shelby were living as strays in Pueblo until their rescue Monday. They're now safe at the shelter with a roof over their heads and regular meals -- but are also suffering from the potentially-lethal parvovirus.
"When we received them, there were nine," said Kate Aviv with HSPPR. "We realized they were infected with parvo. Unfortunately, one was not responsive, and we did have to humanely euthanize it. So now we’re just trying to raise funds to get care for the other eight that they need."
Parvo is a gastrointestinal virus that affects puppies and young dogs, and can be deadly without treatment. Unfortunately, treatment comes with a hefty price.
"It actually costs anywhere from $300-$1,200 to treat a single puppy for parvo," Avis said.
HSPPR set a "modest" fundraising goal of $2,000, which they had met as of Wednesday, but as stated above, that amount probably won't cover the entire litter. They're hoping the public will be encouraged to donate more.
"We set $2,000 as a modest goal and any other additional funds help, and they all go to our medical fund, as well. So even if we get extra, and we don’t use it all on those puppies, it still stays in our medical fund to help others, and those who donate in Pueblo, it does stay in the Pueblo shelter," Avis said.
Though the dogs were found as strays, HSPPR is looking for a potential owner. If no owner comes forward and the puppies' health improves, they will likely be adoptable down the road.
