What's going around: Norovirus - WKOW
(WKOW) -- The flu isn't the only virus keeping people home sick right now.
Dr. Kyle Martin, an emergency physician at SSM Health, said his department has been seeing more cases of norovirus.
Norovirus is a highly contagious, gastrointestinal virus that usually lasts up to three days. Dr. Martin said you'll typically start feeling sick 12 to 48 hours after exposure.
Dr. Martin said to look for the following symptoms as signs of norovirus:
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Headache
- Body aches
If not treated, Dr. Martin said dehydration can occur and lead to serious complications, so watch out for the following symptoms:
- Decreased urination
- Dry mouth, throat
- Dizziness upon standing
- Crying with few tears (in children)
- Extra sleepiness or fussiness (in children)
Seek medical help right away if you suspect dehydration.
Dr. Martin encouraged anyone with norovirus to get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids.
To stop norovirus from spreading, Dr. Martin recommended keeping your hands washed and surfaces cleaned. He said if you have norovirus, stay home until you are symptom-free for 48 hours.
