U.S. News & World Report releases list of top children’s hospitals; see where Ohio ranks - cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus are among the top 10 children’s hospitals in the nation, according to rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.
No children’s hospitals in the Cleveland and Akron areas were ranked in the top 10.
Cincinnati Children’s was ranked third overall, while Nationwide finished eighth. Boston Children’s Hospital was ranked to the top facility for the seventh consecutive year.
Also finishing in the top 10 are Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (2), Texas Children’s Hospital (4) in Houston, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (5), Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora (6), Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. (7), UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (9), and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Standford in Palo Alto, California (10).
The report ranks the top 50 facilities based on 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology.
U.S. News & World Report uses a survey of hospitals and medical experts to gather information for its final rankings. The survey includes data on patient outcomes, patient safety, clinical resources, family centeredness. About 15,000 doctors were surveyed. Information was collected before the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
The Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital was ranked in all 10 categories, with its highest ranking for gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery (12). It was 14h for neonatology, 15th in cardiology and heart surgery, and 17th for cancer treatment. Its lowest ranking was 44th for diabetes and endocrinology.
Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland was ranked in eight of 10 categories, finishing 11th in orthopedics and 13th in pulmonology and lung surgery. It was 21st for diabetes and endocrinology, and 25th for cancer treatment. Its lowest ranking was 38th for gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery.
Akron Children’s Hospital was ranked in three categories, finishing 40th in urology, 48th in neurology and neurosurgery, and 50th in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery.
Last year, Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital finished 35th in the overall rankings. Rainbow and Akron Children’s Hospital were not listed in the top 50.
