The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has retained its distinction as the No. 1 cancer hospital in the country.
MD Anderson tops U.S. News & World Report’s 2020-2021 Best Hospitals rankings for cancer care.
This is the sixth straight year — and the 16th time in 19 years — that MD Anderson has ranked first. The institution has finished first or second in cancer care every year since the publication began issuing its rankings in 1990.

“This incredible honor is especially impactful during these unprecedented times,” Peter WT Pisters, MD, president of MD Anderson, said in a press release. “We are extremely proud of the many amazing people who have made this recognition possible: our patients and their loved ones who entrust us with their care, and our MD Anderson faculty, employees, trainees, students, volunteers, donors and advocates.”
Other hospitals ranked in the top 10 for cancer care are Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance/University of Washington Medical Center and UCSF Medical Center.
Mayo Clinic ranked first in this year’s Honor Roll, which highlights 20 hospitals that deliver exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care. This is the fifth straight year Mayo Clinic topped the Honor Roll.
“To be ranked the No. 1 hospital in the nation for five years consecutively is a testament to the excellence of our remarkable staff, who put our patients’ needs first — even, and especially, during a pandemic,” Gianrico Farrugia, MD, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic, said in a press release. “Providing tailored, compassionate, quality care is at the core of what we do every day, and it’s a privilege to see our staff come together to creatively solve complex medical problems and develop new cures through innovative research.”
Other institutions in this year’s Honor Roll top 10 are Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, UCLA Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCSF Medical Center, NYU Langone Hospitals and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The 31st annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings are intended to help patients with rare or life-threatening conditions make informed decisions about where to receive care.
The 2020-2021 rankings compare more than 4,500 medical centers across the country in 25 adult specialties, conditions and procedures. Only 134 hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty.

This year, U.S. News developed data-driven rankings for 16 specialties: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; orthopedics; psychiatry; pulmonology and lung surgery; rehabilitation; rheumatology and urology.
Best Hospitals rankings are based primarily on objective measures, such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, patient volume and quality of nursing.
The data used for this year’s rankings predated the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s rankings include the U.S. News Hospital Heroes series, which profiles more than 65 health care heroes across the country and features commentary from top executives at many hospitals.
“The pandemic has altered, perhaps permanently, how patients get care and from whom they get it. Amid the disruption, we are steadfastly committed to providing the public with authoritative data for comparing hospital quality,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News, said in a press release. “No hospital’s clinical team came through this unprecedented health crisis unscathed. Our Hospital Heroes series is a tribute to recognize individuals at urban and rural hospitals in communities across the country who have gone above and beyond during this unparalleled time in history.”
U.S. News & World Report began issuing a list of best children’s hospitals in 2007. In June, the publication named Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as the best in the nation for children with cancer.
