50 years ago, scientists thought a desert shrub might help save endangered whales - Science News Magazine

Image
Shrub may save the sperm whale – Science News , March 25, 1972 The sperm whale is an endangered species. A major reason is that the whale oil is heat-resistant and chemically and physically stable. This makes it useful for lubricating delicate machinery. The only substitute is expensive carnauba wax from the leaves of palm trees that grow only in Brazil … [but] wax from the seeds of the jojoba, an evergreen desert shrub, is nearly as good. Update After sperm whale oil was banned in the early 1970s, the United States sought to replenish its reserves with eco-friendly oil from jojoba seeds ( SN: 5/17/75, p. 335 ). Jojoba oil's chemical structure is nearly identical to that of sperm whale oil, and the shrub is native to some North American desert ecosystems, making the plant an appealing replacement. Today, jojoba shrubs are cultivated around the world on almost every continent. Jojoba oil is used in hundreds of products, including cosmetics, ...

These Micro-Mini Cows Are The Same Size As A Dog! - indie88.com

Image
While we're on the subject of genetic modification of animals, I present to you the adorable, squeal-worthy, seemingly impossible micro mini cow. Tiny cattle, one rancher in particular has realized, make great pets. In fact, he says that they very much resemble dogs in temperament. They love treats, being outside, and they even run around and love attention. So what the heck is up with the micro mini cow? How did it get so mini? And why on earth did someone decide to breed such a tiny beast? Let's find out. You'll say "MOO" For These Adorable Micro Mini Cows Image: @the.mabeys on Instagram Micro mini cows are exactly what their name suggests: really, really small cows. A regular cow (depending on the breed) can measure anywhere from 54 to 60 inches in height. Micro mini cows, however, pretty much cap out at around 40 inches. There are very few micro-cattle breeders in the world. One of them, Dustin Pillard, has been breeding them on a farm i...

Rare animal species snapped at Kangaroo Island Reservoir Reserve - The Islander

Image
Motion sensor wildlife cameras have captured the resurgence of rare and endangered native animal species visiting SA Water's Middle River Reservoir Reserve on Kangaroo Island, as the region continues to recover from the 2020 bushfires. Surveys were undertaken by Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife as part of a long-term bushfire recovery monitoring program, with cameras strategically set across the reservoir reserve to help better understand threatened fauna taking refuge within the recovering bushland and to guide feral cat control. Over a six month period, the group recorded species such as the Endangered Heath Goanna, Endangered KI Short-beaked Echidna and the rare Painted Buttonquail. Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife program manager Heidi Groffen said this is an encouraging result, as the natural vegetation continues to rebound. "We have been monitoring three sites since March 2020, with a number of other threatened species detected on camera, like the Bassian thrush an...

Two new species of see-through frog named in Ecuador - National Geographic

Image
Barely 10 miles from Ecuador's capital city Quito, the wrinkled slopes of the Andes shelter one of the most biologically diverse and threatened spots in the tropics. At the foot of the Andes here lies a valley. The river running through it, called the Guayllabamba, is at the heart of a remarkable tale of two newly identified species of glass frogs. One of them, Hyalinobatrachium mashpi , lives on the southern side of the river, in the Mashpi and Tayra Reserves, two private, adjacent rainforest oases that together encompass 6,200 acres. The other frog species, Hyalinobatrachium nouns , dwells in the northern flank of the valley in the Toisan Range, a steep complex of mountains isolated from the main Andes belt, an island floating above a green sea . Both creatures exist at roughly the same altitude, in similar humidity and temperature conditions. They both measure between 1.9 and 2.1 centimeters from snout to vent (a standard length measure of amphibians). Their bodies are nearly id...

State College of Florida adds warning signs in Venice after alligator attacks dog at pond - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Image
SARASOTA COUNTY – State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota has posted additional signs on its Venice campus warning about alligators in Lake Jervey, following a March 9 incident in which a 50-pound pit bull was attacked and likely eaten by an alligator.  A woman visiting the campus brought her unleashed dog to the college. It got close to the freshwater preserve dubbed Lake Jervey, in honor of philanthropist Bill Jervey Jr., and was captured by the alligator, which took it underwater. Two alligators were removed from Lake Jervey Two days later, alligator trappers contracted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission through its Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program caught and removed two alligators from the water body, FWC spokesman Adam Brown said via email. One alligator was 6-foot, 9 inches in length and the other was 7-foot-10. A necropsy was not performed, so it is unknown whether either alligator ate the dog. Brown noted that necropsies are typical...

Here’s where biodiversity is disappearing the quickest in the US - Popular Science

Image
Biodiversity makes the world go round—from tiny freshwater creatures to giant trees, the living things on planet earth are what makes it flourish. But in recent years, humans haven't been all too good at preserving biodiversity—research has shown that nature is declining in unprecedented ways. As of 2019, one in four species on earth are at risk of extinction, and rates of extinction now compared to the times before human activity are about a thousand times higher (with higher rates predicted in the future). Humans are directly impacted by biodiversity loss when it comes to things like water availability and agriculture, which can become stressed as species die out or suffer. This isn't only devastating purely due to loss of the nature that makes our world special—it's also a climate change crisis. Not only does climate change power biodiversity loss, but the weakening of natural ecosystems makes it harder to combat growing greenhouse gas emissions. For example, as ...
