Rodrigo C Silva, 1 Gustavo P Machado 2 1 Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS, USA; 2 Department of Internal Medicine and Surgery of Small Animals, Dr Munhoz Veterinary Hospital, Itápolis, Brazil Abstract: Canine neosporosis is a worldwide disease caused by the obligate intracellular parasite protozoan Neospora caninum , manifesting mainly neurological symptoms. N. caninum has a heteroxenous life cycle and affects a wide range of warm-blooded animals. The domestic and wild canids are the definitive host of the parasite. They shed oocysts after ingestion of tissue cysts from infected intermediate hosts (ovine, equine, bovine, canine, and many other species), containing bradyzoites, or oocyst-contaminated water and food. The presence of dogs in farms is considered a risk factor for production animals. A wide range of diagnostic methods are currently available, but the most used is serology, i...

David Crane | MediaNews Group | Los Angeles Daily News via Getty Images The iconic black and orange monarch butterfly is threatened with extinction because of habitat destruction and climate change, international conservationists said on Thursday. The monarch butterfly, known for its annual migration across North America, was placed in the endangered category of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species. Every autumn, millions of the butterflies undertake the longest known migration of any insect, flying thousands of miles from breeding grounds in the eastern U.S. and Canada to spend the winter months in Mexico and California. The monarch population has declined between 22% and 72% over the past decade, scientists said. The western population is at the greatest risk of extinction, declining by 99.9% from an es...

MRSA resilience may be due to 'repeated spillover' from pigs - Medical News Today

A new study investigates the history of the most common antibiotic-resistant bacterium in European livestock. Researchers found that the bacterium, a form of MRSA, has been very stable over a long period of time, steadily increasing its resistance. The pathogen primarily spreads to humans through direct contact with pigs, but it can also spread from human to human. The evolutionary pressure created by the widespread use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of an increasing number of bacteria that are antibiotic-resistant. One of the more difficult-to-treat of these is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , or MRSA , which is resistant to several otherwise effective antibiotics. A new study from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom investigates a strain of MRSA, clonal-complex 398 (CC3...
