TPWD responds to USFWS decision to list lesser prairie-chicken - Odessa American

Image
AUSTIN Texas Parks and Wildlife Department executive director David Yoskowitz, Ph.D. said via press release on Wednesday that he applauds 16 years of "tremendous" voluntary collaboration with private landowners and industry to conserve lesser prairie-chicken habitat and reiterates the department's opposition to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listing the species. "This decision jeopardizes decades of voluntary conservation efforts, increases regulatory burden and does not assure recovery of the species," Yoskowitz said in the press release. USFWS published a final rule Nov. 25 listing the lesser prairie-chicken under the Endangered Species Act. Once implemented in January, the decision would affect 14 counties in Texas, listing the bird as threatened in some and endangered in others. "Notwithstanding this very unfortunate decision, TPWD stands committed to working with private landowners and industry to conserve the lesser prairie-chicken and its

Bullard: Some Steak Sauce for Your Widget? - Tri-State Livestock News

Numerous meatpacker-oriented economists helped shepherd the decades-long transition from many packers to few packers, many cattle producers to far fewer cattle producers, and from competitive markets to contracts, which are today called alternative marketing arrangements or AMAs but more commonly known as "captive supply" contracts. Now AMAs remove cattle from the competitive cash market long before the cattle are ready for slaughter. The extraction of these cattle from the cash market means they do not contribute to price making or discovery. However, within these AMAs is the provision that though they don't contribute to price making or discovery, they nevertheless are tied directly to the price made and discovered in the cash market at some point in the future. Put another way, these AMAs are akin to a parasite that lives and feeds on its host. In the case of the market, these AMAs are dependent on the competitive cash market, which is their host, and t

Easy to do -- any shopping you do this week, and all winter, directly and significantly invests in their continued production of the artisan food products you love! 2023 is soon underway, the holidays are nearly behind us, and spring seems distant to us now. But January is the month farmers invest in the outdoor growing season to come. One place that helps farmers and food artisans sustain their potential is our year-round, weekly market. With less than 25% of NYS farmers markets staying open year-round, each market dollar received by a vendor in the winter is important. Pleasantville's winter market offers shoppers a way to continue connecting dir

Urinary tract infection caused by Edwardsiella tarda: a report of the ... - BMC Infectious Diseases

Image
Edwardsiella tarda is an uncommon pathogen from the Enterobacteriaceae family that can rarely infect humans. The human infection rate is 0.0073% in Japan and 1% in Panama. According to a cohort study conducted in Japan between January 2005 and December 2016, the incidence rate of E. tarda is 0.02%, and the mortality rate within 90 days is 26.9% [3, 7, 11]. Clinical complications of E. tarda infection are enteritis, liver abscess, cholecystitis, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, mycotic aneurysm, necrotizing fasciitis, empyema, osteomyelitis, psoas abscess, spinal epidural abscess secondary peritonitis and UTI [12, 13]. Our patient is the first case of human E. tarda infection in Iran and the second in the Middle East. According to the reports, E. tarda infection cases are mostly reported in East Asia, Australia, North and South America [3]. Edwardsiella tarda infection frequently occurs when water temperatures are high, particularly from summer to autumn [14]. It is mor

Manatee Cousins, Coral And Abalone Among 10% Of Marine Life At Risk Of Extinction - Forbes

Image
Topline Nearly one in ten marine plants and animal species are at risk of extinction according to a new report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which found that climate change driven by human activity is a major factor and "decimating" sea life around the globe. Key Facts The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) tracks threatened species on its Red List, the world's most comprehensive tally on the global status of biological diversity. The latest update to the list, published Friday, found that about 9% of the 17,930 marine species assessed are at risk of going extinct and that 41% are impacted by climate change. One of the most affected types of marine life are abalone shellfish species, or marine snails, of which 44% included on the list are threatened by extinction, the IUCN said. Populations of dugongs—marine mammals related to manatees—in East Africa and New

This Is the Absolute Worst Food for Gut Health, According To Registered Dietitians - Parade Magazine

Image
If you're trying to improve your gut health, the first step is to take inventory of your diet. What you eat can affect the amount of good and bad bacteria in the gut microbiome—and when there's an imbalance, it can lead to a wide range of health issues. To learn more about how diet impacts the gut and the number one food to avoid, we asked experts to weigh in. Here's what they had to say. How Your Eating Habits Affect Gut Health The foods that an individual eats directly affect their gut microbiome, which is responsible for a wide variety of functions, including immunity, digestion and metabolism, among many other processes. An imbalance of healthy gut microbes may contribute to poor metabolism, poor digestion and weight gain, among other negative health consequences, Mary Wirtz, MS, RDN, CSSD, nutritional consultant at Mom Loves Best, explains. Spatial homogeneity pursuit of regression coefficients for hand, foot ... - Nature.com

Image
Abstract To explore the complex spatial pattern between the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and meteorological factors [average temperature (AT), average relative humidity (ARH), average air pressure (AP), average wind speed (AW)], this paper constructed a Spatial Clustering coefficient (SCC) regression model to detect spatial clustering patterns of each regression coefficients in different seasons. The results revealed that compared with geographically weighted regression (GWR), the coefficients estimated by SCC method were more smooth with clearly identified spatial and improved edge effects. Therefore, interesting spatial patterns were easy to identify in the SCC estimated coefficients. And then, the SCC method had better estimation accuracy in estimating the relationship between potential meteorological factors and HFMD cases. Meteorological factors had different significance in their effect on HFMD incidence depending on the season. Specifically, the influence of
