Winnie Harlow Sends A Powerful Message To Her Bullies With Her Cruella Halloween Costume

Model Winnie Harlow used Halloween as a way to send a powerful message to her former bullies, turning a cruel childhood nickname into a fabulous costume. She dressed up as Cruella de Vil, the villain from 101 Dalmatians played by Glenn Close, wearing a dramatic spotty cape with oversized shoulder pads, a monochrome wig and, of course, she was accompanied by a number of adorable puppies.

"Growing up I got teased a lot for my skin," the model writes in the caption, referencing how people used to treat her because of her vitiligo. "I got called everything you already know... And Dalmatian." She explains that this specific nickname really stuck with her and made her have "a bit of disdain for the film as a child".

She then writes how as an adult she started to love the film, adding "I realised how much I missed out with 101 Dalmatians as a child based on the words of bullies." And is there any better way to laugh in the face of her former bullies and reclaim this hurtful nickname, than by transforming herself into Cruella?

The photo and accompanying video she shared on Instagram is certainly a high production set up and is far beyond a makeshift Halloween costume, with Dalmatian puppies flying behind her on a green screen and a long credit list of the team that helped to transform her into Glenn Close's legendary character.

Throughout her career the Canadian model has been an advocate of body confidence, as almost a decade ago she delivered a moving Ted Talk entitled "My Story Is Painted On My Body" and has consistently pushed a message of inclusivity when it comes to beauty standards ever since.
