A Look Behind The Maravilla Rum Label By Fat Basset Design

The branding and label for the Maravilla Rum represents the fateful trip of the Spanish Galleon, Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas on New Year's Day in 1656. Four days into her journey she smashed to pieces on Little Bahama Bank with 650 souls on board. In addition to the tragic loss of life, millions of ounces of gold and silver were spread across the ocean floor along with a 400lb gold table encrusted with emeralds, diamonds and ruby's, and a priceless 5ft statue of Madonna and child. To this day, most of this treasure remains undiscovered.

In developing the creative we imagined the rum itself as part of this lost treasure, found hundred's of years later, weathered and worn, as it washes up along the shore. And with the crew lost at sea, we use the label to reveal elements of the story. For instance, the position, angle and direction of the Maravilla are important as they illustrate the harrowing fait that awaits as she sets sail towards the tear in the label, never to return. The puff of smoke on the port side of the distant ship is cannon fire which was sent as a warning of the high ground ahead (unfortunately this was not seen in time). The medallion fixed to the face, known as a "Piece of Eight", is treasure found in the wreckage, worn away from the shifting tides of the salt waters.

All that said, the treasure is certainly not lost forever. Although not shown, on the underside of the label there is a treasure map to the last know whereabouts of the Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas. The map is slowly revealed as you responsibly enjoy your bottle of Maravilla Rum.

We had fun exploring the history of the Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas, but there are a number of tactile elements that help bring life to this label. The label appears weathered and torn along the edges and tear, and thanks the production team at Resource Label we were able to create 3 different dies to give an individuality to the bottles – creating a sense of ownership for the consumer. The medallion, although obviously not the real thing, was given a specific foil treatment to give the impression of treasure but also account for the aforementioned shifting tides that would wear away the shine of the metal. Lastly, we used a heavier stock to foster the look of an actual label that would be used during the 1600's which gave us the opportunity to create a deboss effect along the story side, accounting for a very slight, deliberate "tear/offset" within the last paragraph of the story.

The team at Fat Basset Design is incredibly proud of the completed work but it was a total team effort. So we'd be remiss not to mention the talent of Steven Noble whose illustration gave us the foundation to move forward; Resource Label Group printing which brought life to our vision; and MacKenzie Hennessey whose photography gave the creative a breath of fresh air.

Stingray Injuries Rise As More People Head To San Diego Beaches

Keep your eyes, and feet, peeled for stingrays this summer. Coronado lifeguards have treated about 10 to 25 stingray injuries a day over the past few weeks.

SAN DIEGO — If you feel something painful in your foot while in the ocean this summer, you could have been stung by a stingray.

Doctors and lifeguards said there's an uptick in stingray injuries at San Diego beaches in the summer months.

Summer in San Diego brings tourists, sunny weather and flocks of people to the beaches. More people are getting stung because there are more people in the ocean this time of year.

"What we're usually seeing is just more people in the water, enjoying the ocean, enjoying the beach, more feet on the bottom of the sea where the stingrays are is going to result in more feet getting in contact with the stingrays and getting stung," Dr. William Bianchi with Sharp Coronado Hospital said.

Bianchi said he sees an influx of stingray injuries in late May and June, then it slows down in July and when tourist season ends.

The best thing to do is put your foot or the location of the sting in a hot water bath to ease the pain. Lifeguards and doctors can provide hot water and assess the injury if you're stung.

"It can be really really painful but the second you immerse the foot or put the foot in a hot water bath, it turns the toxin off and the pain goes away pretty quickly," Bianchi said.

Bianchi also dispelled a myth that is said to help with the pain of a sting.

"That's a myth, urinating on it certainly isn't going to help much with the pain and it's certainly not going to look cool or be sanitary," Bianchi said.

In most cases, the sting is painful and is a puncture wound in the foot. In severe cases, the venom can get stuck in bone or soft tissue and cause nerve or vein damage or become infected.

Bianchi said it's best not to try to remove the barb yourself because it can break and become harder to get out.

"Just make certain that you protect the area and get to the emergency department without bumping it or displacing it," Bianchi said.

Coronado Lifeguard Sergeant Damon Bassett has been stung by a stingray seven times in his life.

"Its very painful," Basset said.

Coronado lifeguards have seen 10-25 stingray injuries a day over the past few weeks.

Basset said the best thing to do when getting in the water is the stingray shuffle. Shuffling your feet stirs up the sand and scares stingrays away. Also, keeping your feet off the ocean floor so you're not near the animals.

"You got to shuffle your feet, go slow, cause some vibrations in the sand so it knows that there's feet around," Basset said.

He said there aren't more stingrays this time of year, but there are more people in areas where stingrays feed on clams.

"They are here year-round eating the clams, there's just more people in the water that's why you see the uptick in the injuries," Basset said.

City SC Loses To Colorado 4-1; Burki Leaves Game With Injury

St. Louis City SC goalie Roman Burki lets a shot get by on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in the second half of a match against the Colorado Rapids at CityPark in St. Louis.

Christian Gooden Post-Dispatch

Before Sunday's game began, City SC knew it wouldn't have midfielder Eduard Lowen, who felt tightness in his adductor muscle late in the San Jose game on Wednesday and didn't finish the game. He was listed as questionable on the weekly injury report and didn't suit up.

Just over a half-hour into the game, City SC lost goalkeeper Roman Burki to a leg injury, with backup Ben Lundt taking his place.

In a season where little has gone right for City SC, bad things keep happening. The end result was a 4-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. The loss snaps City SC's winning streak at one, gives interim coach John Hackworth his first defeat and leaves the team a little more catching up to do in its hopes of reaching the playoffs in its second season. City SC remains one of two teams in the league yet to win on the road. It's the second time in three games City SC has allowed four goals.

City SC's lone goal came from midfielder John Klein, who headed in a cross from defender Jayden Reid, two guys who have spent most of the season with City2 and wouldn't have been on the roster on Sunday had not the team's plague of injuries knocked out so many players.

Burki didn't make the team's previous trip, to Vancouver, because of what then-coach Bradley Carnell said was some knee problems that were nothing major. Burki played the San Jose game on Wednesday without incident, but looked to overextend something on a save attempt on a shot by Omir Fernandez that hit the post. Burki stayed in the game for four minutes before being subbed out for Lundt, making just his third MLS appearance in two seasons.

Burki, the MLS goalkeeper of the year in 2023, was selected for this season's All-Star Game and has been arguably City SC's MVP this season.

His departure meant City SC was without Burki, Lowen, leading scorer Klauss, midfielders Celio Pompeu, Tomas Ostrak and Rasmus Alm and defender Joakim Nilsson. Also still away from the team is defender Kyle Hiebert, who is with the Canadian national team that has made a surprising run to the semifinals of the Copa America. In Burki, Klauss, Lowen and Nilsson, City SC was without its four highest paid players.

It didn't matter who was in goal for City SC on Colorado's two first-half goals, which came from unmarked players in the box as Colorado quickly countered against City SC's defense and defenders were caught upfield and couldn't get back in time to get everyone covered. Kevin Cabral scored the first goal, in the 6th minute, off a pass from Cole Bassett; Basset scored in the 35th minute off a pass from Cabral. Jonathan Lewis slammed in a cross from Calvin Harris in the 81st minute for the third goal.

In between Colorado's first two goals, Klein scored his first MLS goal, heading in a cross from Reid. That goal came in the 12th minute, just six minutes after Colorado took the initial lead and City SC had the better of play for the next 20 minutes but couldn't get another goal.

As expected, the team signed Reid to a first-team contract for the rest of the season, along with options for 2025 and 2026. Reid started at left back, while right back Tomas Totland was given a break after starting all but one other game this season as Akil Watts played there. Totland came on for Watts in the 59th minute, the same time that Samuel Adeniran came on for Hosei Kijima. With Reid, Michael Wentzel and Klein, there were three players in City SC's starting 11 who started the season with the club's development team.

The team's injury plight was evident in Hackworth's ability to substitute. After he brought on Adeniran, the only other attacking option he had on the bench was 17-year-old Caden Glover. All the remaining players on the bench were defenders.

Next up for City SC is Vancouver on Saturday at CityPark.
