An Armagh mother has praised a nurse at Craigavon Area Hospital whom she says saved the life of her darling son and adds: “I’m so grateful to have my baby home.” Colleen McGirr, meanwhile, has also urged other people to trust their instincts if they suspect their child is ill and demand attention. The young mum says she is grateful to the medical staff and consultants who have tended to baby Tyler, who was in a coma last week after being rushed to hospital. She has praised the staff but hit out that the powers-that-be who have allowed the “NHS to become so bad”, with not enough resources and “the limited number of staff stretched to their limits”. Colleen told Armagh I : “Tyler is seven months old. He is now home after two weeks in hospital. Three weeks before that he was in hospital for six days.” The photographs show Tyler in a coma last week and the other is how the little mite is today. This may be because there is an abnormal pregnancy, the cow has a life-threatening condition, the pregnancy has gone on too long leading to health issues or other reasons. All require careful thought and examination as every case is unique and the ultimate goal is to have both the cow and calf survive. ADVERTISEMENT If very close to the end of gestation, there are a few protocols. The use of prostaglandins and dexamethasone in combination will give induction generally within 30 to 36 hours. I like to use the regular dose of prostaglandin (two cc of Estrumate or an equivalent product) and about 25 mg of dexamethasone, but your vet should have a formula they like for these prescription products. A feature of the store cattle sale at  Ayr Auction Mart was a Charolais X steer, kindly donated by  Mrs Shona Paterson, of Kayshill, from her store cattle stock. The steer was auctioned with the proceeds going to Ayrshire Cancer Support. It was purchased for £2,600 by Mr Jim  Craig, of Craig Wilson Limited Auctioneers, and was very kindly donated  back to be auctioned again- where it was duly purchased for £2,200 by  The Gibb Family of Toftcombs, Biggar, to make an incredible sum raised  of £4,800. This amount was combined with donations from hauliers and Craig Wilson customers. On the day the total amount raised was an incredible £5717.10.
