Mobile Pet Grooming

People love their pets, but neither Puss, Rover nor their owners loves the bathing and grooming process. But if you love pets and you have that special touch that makes them putty in your hands, you can make everybody happy with a mobile pet-grooming service. You'll roll to clients' homes in your specially outfitted van, then take Boots and Fido aboard and work your miracles. The advantages to this business are that you can start part-time, your earning potential is excellent, and you get to work with animals every day you choose. The pet industry is big--according the American Veterinary Medical Association, more than 58 million U.S. Households are home to dogs and/or cats. You'll need plenty of experience in pet-grooming, including the proper ways to clip and brush various breeds and a knowledge of animal behavior. You should also know something about human behavior. When owners take their four-footed friends to a traditional groomer, they generally have to leave until the job's done, but when you pull up in the driveway, they'll want to watch you work.

The Market

Since your clients will be dog and cat owners, you'll want to make the rounds of pet shops and veterinary offices with your brochures and business cards. Introduce yourself, leave your materials and ask for referrals. Place an ad under 'pets' in the classified section of your local paper and in the pet-grooming section of your local Yellow Pages.

Needed Equipment

You'll need a van (or an old but serviceable motor home if you already have one) set up for pet grooming with a tub, grooming table, generator or outdoor cords long enough to give you access to an outside power supply and, of course, all your grooming tools and supplies.

Woman's Aging Dog Inspires Her To Open Mobile Grooming Service

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A new business is rolling through the area with the goal of making it easier for people to get their pets groomed.

Courtney Presar opened Groomer Has It in October.

She says her dog's constant anxiety at the groomer inspired her to reimagine a service that puts pets and their owners at ease.

"My business is really inspired by my dog, Koby, who's a 15-year-old cockapoo," Presar said. "For years, his grooming appointments were really just something that we dreaded as a family because he was always anxious before the appointment. I knew that he was going to have to be there for four or five hours or more and his old arthritic legs didn't like that very much at all."

To help ease Koby's anxiety and hers, Presar brainstormed ways to make the grooming process a bit easier for her family and other families dealing with similar issues.

Thus, Groomer Has It, was born.

Her company is a mobile grooming service that comes right to your home with all the grooming services needed for dogs and cats loaded right in this van.

"We really come into it with care and compassion knowing that this is a scary thing for a lot of dogs," Presar explains.

The new business is already booked with several appointments.

Presar says her background in business and finance helped her get the mobile service up and running while hiring an experienced groomer to make sure each client gets the best service.

"I was really looking for someone that you know had the heart and the love for the animals themselves and wasn't just there to knock out the grooms," Presar described.

She says that the model is already proving to be a success.

Presar says fulfilling this dream isn't just about reaching her goals, but also setting an example for her children that a vision with a plan always wins in the end.

Dog Grooming

Startup Costs: Under $2,000Part Time: Can be operated part-time.Franchises Available? YesOnline Operation? No

Tap into the highly lucrative dog grooming industry by becoming a dog groomer, or as groomers prefer to be called, a canine cosmetologist. There are an estimated 30,000,000 pet dogs in North America, and most owners think nothing of spending a bundle on a regular basis to keep their pampered pooches well-groomed. Not all dog groomers are professionally trained and certified. I do recommend, however, that you invest in the training to become a professional dog groomer if this is a service you want to sell. Dog owners are a conscientious bunch and most do not like to leave their best friends in the care of the inexperienced. Both of the associations listed below offer dog grooming training workshops and exams across the United States and Canada to become a Certified Master Groomer. This is a service you can easily operate from a homebased grooming studio, or a commercial storefront. You might even want to consider a mobile operation so you can service clients who don't have transportation, or who have dogs with health problems that keep them from traveling. The profit potential is excellent, as many groomers report earnings in the range of $50,000 after expenses.
