Krypto Could Be Superman's Best Character (Or Gunn's Biggest Mistake)

James Gunn's Superman trailer includes the Man of Steel's canine pal Krypto the Superdog, who may be the most polarizing element of the movie. The Superman trailer provides the first proper tease of Gunn's upcoming DCU, with David Corenswet's Superman dealing with a lot of challenges and hardships in the trailer. Fortunately, his loyal dog Krypto is on hand to provide Kal-El with some support. Krypto was teased by Gunn in the lead-up to the Superman trailer – and was featured in on of the first promo images. While Krypto brings some undeniable charm and lovability to the Superman trailer, his role in the movie might not be as easy to sell audiences on.

While Krypto the Superdog has been a feature of DC Comics for decades, his live-action appearances have been few and far between. The reason for that is simple: Krypto is just difficult to translate to the screen in a live-action format. While the role of Krypto in 2022's DC animated movie DC's League of Super Pets ran with the magic and whimsy of a super-powered canine superhero, the contrast of Krypto's live-action roles shows how bringing him to life in live-action often comes with considerable modification.

Clark Kent's dog Shelby in Smallville was the subject of lab experiments and was as loyal to Clark as one would expect Superman's dog to be. At the same time, Clark giving Shelby the moniker of Krypto acted as more of an Easter egg than a proper name. Krypto's appearance on Superman & Lois also didn't happen until the final epilogue of the last season, and even then, Tyler Hoechlin's Superman had advanced into old age with his life as Superman mostly behind him, with Krypto serving as a loyal companion with no superpowers. James Gunn's Superman is, in a sense, the first real attempt to truly adapt Krypto the Superdog into live-action as an active player in Superman's world.

When it comes to Gunn's take on Krypto, he seems to be swinging for the fences with the super-powered canine. The Superman trailer shows Superman, seemingly wounded and exhausted, crash-landing in the Arctic, whistling for Krypto, and asking him to "Take me home", with Krypto pulling Superman through the snow by his cape.

That obviously indicates super-strength as one of Krypto's powers from the comics, while he also exhibits super-speed as he zooms through the snow like a snow plow. On top of having essentially the same powers as David Corenswet's Superman, Krypto also carries a flowing red cape complete with Superman's S-shield. While Gunn has made clear that Krypto won't be a talking dog in Superman, his version of Krypto realizes the super-pet's power and presence perfectly. Granted, this breed of dog Gunn has cast as Krypto is very different than the Golden Retriever breed usually seen in comics, but it seems DCU Krypto will also be an Easter egg ode to some of Gunn's real-life pets. That personal touch could either make Krypto even more endearing to viewers – or come off as an egotistical choice that bucks comic book tradition.

Superman's Krypto Will Either Be Great or A Major Flaw Krypto grabbing Superman's cape in DC Studios Superman

Gunn's previous comic book movies tend to have animal characters and side-kicks of sorts, such as Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, or Weasel in The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos. Though Krypto won't talk, Gunn's evident ability to make anthropomorphic animals into break-out characters could spell good things for the reception of Krypto's role in Superman.

On the other hand, the fact that every preceding live-action Superman property has gone out of its way to modify Krypto (if not omit him) also speaks to the inherent silliness of the character at a conceptual level. Adorable or not, a super-powered dog with a cape reads like a very goofy element in a superhero movie that's trying to have genuine stakes and challenges for Superman. If Gunn can't work the same magic with Krypto the Superdog that he did with Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Weasel, Krypto might end up being a major Achille's Heel of his Superman film. Superman himself might be the most iconic superhero in existence, but Krypto the Superdog in (what is, for all intents and purposes) his live-action debut could either win over or annoy audiences.

Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Every Actor Who's Played Superman's Krypto The Superdog

Superman may be the Man of Steel, faster than a speeding bullet and all that jazz, but even the greatest superhero needs a loyal best friend. Of course, he got the cape, the powers, and the whole "saving the world" tag, but when it comes to a sidekick, Krypto the Superdog is his savior.

Honestly, we can think of him as Superman's four-legged counterpart, a cosmic canine with all the superpowers of his Kryptonian buddy and the charm to match. He isn't just any dog, he's been zipping through comics, TV shows, and movies for decades.

Over the years, Krypto's adventures have been brought to life by some pretty talented voices, each bringing their unique twist to this super-pup.

From Saturday morning cartoons of our childhoods to modern blockbusters, a select few don't just voice Krypto; they have given him personality, heart, and just the right amount of sass. Whether he's chasing bad guys or wagging his tail next to Superman, Krypto has always made his impact and will continue to shine. Let's thank those who embraced the world of Krypto by giving him a voice.

Samuel Vincent (Krypto the Superdog)

The voice behind Krypto in Krypto the Superdog is voiced by Samuel Vincent, who brought Superman's furry sidekick to life with heroic charm and a splash of puppy energy.

He didn't just voice a super-powered pooch, rather he gave Krypto a personality that was all loyal, brave, and downright lovable. With a tone that could switch from "serious hero mode" to "playful puppy vibes" in seconds, Vincent truly made Krypto feel like the ultimate mix of Superman and your favorite childhood dog. Didn't he?

Of course, his voice perfectly captured Krypto's cosmic adventures, whether it was while battling Mechanikat or chilling with Streaky the Supercat.

Jason J. Lewis (Justice League Action)

In Justice League Action, Krypto the Superdog made a return, and this time voiced by Jason J. Lewis. But in Justice League Action, Krypto wasn't just saving the day alongside Superman but also proving that even the fiercest villains have to reckon with a super-powered pup.

Lewis brought Krypto to life with a voice that literally exuded both strength and a touch of playful charm, and it was perfect for a dog who's got the same cosmic abilities as Superman.

Whether it was soaring through the sky or battling alongside the Justice League, Krypto's voice carried a sense of loyalty and bravery that made him an unforgettable part of the action. And not to mention Lewis' take on Krypto definitely added a fresh layer of excitement to the already dynamic Justice League team.

Dwayne Johnson (League of Super-Pets)

Dwayne Johnson is a legend of voicing and he brings his signature charisma to every voice role he has ever played, including voicing Krypto in DC's League in Super-Pets.

Known for his larger-than-life personality, The Rock infused Krypto with a comedic yet heroic flair that made this pup both lovable and tough. And being the leader of a ragtag group of super-powered animals, Krypto's voice under The Rock's direction carried both the weight of responsibility and the playful energy of a dog who's always ready to save the day.

Unknown (Superman: Legacy)

The Superman trailer just dropped, and Krypto the Superdog made a pretty epic entrance, bursting through the snow to save his injured owner, Superman. But, surprise, surprise, James Gunn isn't giving us a simple, lovable, tail-wagging dog. According to Gunn, Krypto's relationship with Superman is, shall we say, complicated. He shared with Deadline,

This movie at the end of the day is not about power. This movie is about a loose term of the word a human being and who he is as a person and virtually struggling in his day-to-day life, and we see a different aspect of him in the beginning. His relationship with Krypto is complicated. He's not nearly the best dog. There's a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer.

Well, turns out, it's not all puppy kisses and belly rubs in this version, Krypto's got a bit more bite to him, and Gunn's hinting at some behavior that's a far cry from your perfect pooch.

Maybe he's a couch-sprayer, maybe he's a "my-walk-not-yours" kind of dog. Who knows? Krypto's about to be a much bigger handful than we've seen in past Superman flicks, and honestly, that's part of what's got us intrigued.

And you know what's more mysterious? We still don't know who's voicing Krypto. The mystery of his voice adds a whole other layer of excitement to this canine conundrum.

Will he bark in a heroic, gravelly tone or let out a snarky growl? We're just as curious as you are. Whatever happens, Krypto's about to steal more than just Superman's cape, he might steal the whole movie.

Guess we'll find out when Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.

Superman Returns With A Superdog To Save Superhero Movies

The first trailer has been released for James Gunn's hotly awaited reboot of Superman, a film that Hollywood is hoping will come to its rescue as one of the biggest releases of 2025.

David Corenswet plays the Man of Steel in the movie that's intended to kick-start a new era for DC Studios, which writer-director Gunn and producer Peter Safran took over in 2022.

The trailer starts with Superman crashing to Earth in an icy landscape before being revived by Krypto the Superdog, who looks set to become a fan favourite.

The two-minute trailer also unveiled Rachel Brosnahan as the latest Lois Lane and British actor Nicholas Hoult as a bald and menacing Lex Luthor.

Corenswet, 31, who has previously appeared in TV series The Politician, Hollywood and We Own This City, is the fourth person to play the role in a major Superman movie, and the first for a decade.

Henry Cavill, who appeared in 2013's Man of Steel and its spin-offs, announced in 2022 that he would return to the role - but Gunn and Safran decided to replace him after they took over DC.

However, many fans felt Cavill was unfairly treated and in recent days have been airing their views on social media that he should be allowed to finish his Superman saga.

Corenswet has taken ownership of the cape, though, and is seen in the trailer saving a girl from an explosion, smashing out of a glass cabinet and kissing Lois in mid-air.

He also has a rock hurled at his head by a member of an angry crowd as he walks into a Stagg Industries building, and his Clark Kent alter-ego is seen in the Daily Planet newspaper office and with Pa Kent (played by Pruitt Taylor Vince) in rural Kansas.

The trailer also unveils other characters including Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Rex Mason/Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Michael Holt/Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi).

It received a broadly enthusiastic reaction on social media after being released. The film will reach cinemas on 11 July 2025.

It comes at a key moment for Hollywood, which is trying to retain excitement around blockbuster films after a number of box office misfires and the onset of "superhero fatigue".

DC has struggled to find major hits in recent years, with films like Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 1984 and Joker: Folie à Deux - part of the wider DC stable - each earning less than $60m (£48m) at the North American box office.

Elswehere in Hollywood, Sony's latest phase of superhero films ended with a flop when Kraven the Hunter opened with takings of just $11m (£9m) last weekend.

Kraven the Hunter was the last in Sony's series related to the Spider-Man universe - alongside the Venom franchise, which performed relatively well, and Morbius and Madame Web, which did not.

Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine was a big success for Marvel this summer and the studio remains the biggest hitter, but that was its only release this year. It is due to kick off its sixth phase with a Fantastic Four reboot in 2025.

David A Gross, who writes the FranchiseRe box office newsletter, said a result like Kraven's was "the new normal for superhero films" because "nothing is working outside of well established stories".

Four superhero films were released in 2024 and there will be another four in 2025 - down from seven before the pandemic, he said.

"The Superman story has the history and pedigree to be a hit in today's market," he told BBC News. "It's a 'classic' and will be taken seriously by both superhero fanatics and broader fans.

"James Gunn knows what he's doing and gives the project total credibility. With this kind of story, casting is changeable, and in this case the new cast is a plus - it's part of updating the story.

"Nothing is a given now for the superhero genre, but Superman should do very well, and these films are strong around the world."

The film is expected to focus on its titular character balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

Gunn has said it starts "right in the middle of the action", with Superman already in existence, and "takes place over a short amount of time".

He has also said there's "plenty of humor in it" - although less than in some of his previous films like Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy.

"People like Rachel are so funny and David is very [funny as well], so there's humour in it," he said.

"But it's trying to create something that is grounded, but also it's an incredibly fanciful world, it's fantasy, it's taking from other things like Game of Thrones, where it's this universe where superheroes actually exist. What are they like? There's a magic there that's undeniable."

Corenswet's Superman is seen wearing the hero's famous red trunks - but Gunn said he was "on the no-trunks team for a long time" before filming started, until the star convinced him otherwise.

"One of the things David said is that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He's an alien. He's got these incredible powers. He shoots beams out of his eyes, can blow the truck over.

"He's this incredibly powerful, could be considered scary individual and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity.

"So he dresses like a professional wrestler, he dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him. That shows that. And I was like, that really clicked in for me."
