Dogs can form strong bonds with their humans and other animals in the house, so when they experience loss—whether it's a fellow pet, their human, or even a routine change—they can show signs of grief. Whether they have lost a puppy, a sibling, or a favorite human there are ways you can help your fur baby through this difficult time.
Signs of grief can include things like seeming more tired than usual, not eating as much, and yes, expressing sadness (like barking or whining), when they see a photo or the space where their favorite person or pet hung out.
Here are some things you can do to help your grieving dog cope.
Stick to their usual routine of mealtimes and walks as much as possible. Dogs thrive on routines and keepings things the same can provide them a sense of comfort. PetCareRx notes, "Exercise and play are very important to dogs. They provide the dog with physical exercise, a way to blow off steam, and an opportunity for socialization.
"For some dogs, having fun with their pack is the most comforting thing they can do. If your dog's canine companion died recently or passed away suddenly due to illness, then you may need to take extra steps for your dog to feel better about life without them.
Give your dog extra affection and cuddle time. Some pups may be more clingy than normal after a loss of a pet sibling. Make sure you reassure them by providing them with extra love.
Don't rush your dog through the grieving process. It may take them a while to process missing their fur sibling, and we owe it to them to give them all the time they need.
