Detroit Lions Release Backup Quarterback On Eve Of 2025 NFL Draft
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions released reserve quarterback Jake Fromm on the eve of the 2025 NFL draft.
Fromm was the fourth quarterback in the pecking order after the Lions signed veteran Kyle Allen during free agency. Jared Goff is the entrenched franchise quarterback Hendon Hooker will have to fend off Allen to regain his QB2 role this offseason and in training camp.
"I mean, look, it's just competition," Lions general manager Brad Holmes said of the QB2 situation earlier this month. "That's all it is. I mean, look, we like Hendon, excited about him.
"But still got high hopes for him, but nobody's gonna be given a job either. So if Hendon wants to be the number two quarterback, then win the No. 2 quarterback job."
This move doesn't change anything heading into the draft, it just opens another roster spot ahead a busy week of additions via the draft and undrafted rookie free agents.

Fromm was a late addition to training camp last year. But he made enough of an impression to land on the practice squad and spend the entire season in Allen Park.
He was a fifth-round pick out of Georgia back in 2020. Fromm spent the first two years of his career with the Buffalo Bills, then bounced between the New York Giants and Washington Commanders before landing in Detroit.
Fromm started two games for the Giants in 2021, with the team losing both of those games as he completed 45% of his passes for 210 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
