Paper Treatment to Protect Against Spread of Coronavirus - What They Think

Image
Is there a way to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 through printed materials using an antimicrobial paper treatment? Under the current circumstances, no commercial lab has a suitable test environment or authority to test against COVID-19. However, there may be a suitable solution tested against a similar virus. Background The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly changed all of our lives for the short term—and perhaps even in the long term. The most immediate concerns center around isolating those infected to minimize the spread, finding remedies for those who are infected, and finding a vaccine to prevent the disease from its continued journey through the global population. I recently had an opportunity to interview John Beadle, President of Associated Printing Production, Inc (APPi)  about his research and collaboration with Biomaster in the UK on developing a treatment for printed materials to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. In this interview, we discussed his approach us...

(Photo by CHRIS DELMAS/AFP via Getty Images) AFP via Getty Images Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces that may have the Covid-19 coronavirus sounds easy, right? Just keep repeating the phrase, “don’t inject the disinfectant into my body, don’t inject the disinfectant into my body,” and everything is straightforward, correct? Well, not exactly. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has heightened the need for good disinfecting practices. You can still make mistakes while trying to disinfect high-touch surfaces such as the statues in your Kanye West shrine. So keep in the mind the following: 1. Clean before disinfecting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website explains the difference between cleaning and disinfecting. Cleaning is when you remove dirty or unwanted stuff from a surfa...

Entrectinib Results Emphasize Need for NTRK Detection - Medscape

Image
Although fusions in the neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase ( NTRK ) gene are rare in gastrointestinal carcinomas (found in fewer than 5% of cases), they should be looked for, inasmuch as treatment with the TRK inhibitor entrectinib ( Rozlytrek , Genentech/Roche) can achieve robust and durable responses, say researchers. This point was made during several presentations at the virtual World Conference on Gastrointestinal Cancer (WCGC) 2020 on July 1. Entrectinib and similar agents that act on NTRK fusion genes are described as tumor agnostic, in that they are biomarkers that define the cancer rather than the organ of origin. The US Food and Drug Administration last year granted accelerated approval of entrectinib for patients with locally advanced or metastatic NTRK-expressing solid tumors that have progressed following prior therapies. The drug can also be used as a first-line treatment when there are no effective therapies. At the meeting, Manish R. Patel, MD, Department of ...
