The Brat Pack documentary Brats has gotten Sony thinking about a St. Elmo's Fire sequel with the original film's stars.

In Brats—which is streaming on Hulu—former Brat Pack actor-turned-director Andrew McCarthy tracks down most of the members of the 1980s acting group to reflect on their movies and the negative effect the label had on their careers.

The moniker was coined by New York Magazine writer David Blum in his 1985 interview feature called Hollywood's Brat Pack. Now, nearly 40 years after the release of one of the Brat Pack's biggest movies, Sony Pictures is exploring the idea of reigniting St. Elmo's Fire, Deadline reports.

But instead of a reboot of the film, Deadline noted that the new version of St. Elmo's Fire would effectively be a sequel that would depend on the return of all of the original cast members.

A romantic drama that followed a tight-knit group of Georgetown college students who are dealing with the uncertainties of life after graduation, St. Elmo's Fire marks one of the biggest ensembles of Brat Pack actors to appear in the same film.

Released by Sony Pictures Entertainment subsidiary Columbia Pictures, St. Elmo's Fire stars McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Rob Lowe and Mare Winningham.

Of the actors who starred in St. Elmo's Fire, McCarthy interviewed Estevez, Moore, Sheedy and Lowe. Nelson didn't participate in Brats and only appears in archive footage in the documentary. Winningham, who technically wasn't considered a member of the Brat Pack, also only appears in archive footage.

Since Sony is only in the exploration stage of another St. Elmo's Fire film, a script has not been written yet, Deadline reported.

The trade publication also added that it's uncertain whether any of the original St. Elmo's Fire cast members have even been contacted yet. The original St. Elmo's Fire movie was directed by co-written by Joel Schumacher, who died in 2020 at age 80.

Another famous Brat Pack film director Andrew McCarthy explores in Brats is 1985's The Breakfast Club, which stars Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall.

Ringwald also stars in the 1986 Brat Pack movie Pretty in Pink, which also features McCarthy and Jon Cryer. Although Cryer isn't a member of the Brat Pack—and stresses in Brats that he doesn't want to be—he is interviewed by McCarthy for the documentary.

Like Nelson, Ringwald declined to participate in Brats and is only featured in archive footage.

Most of the Brat Pack's movies from 1983-1990 are available on a variety of streaming services. Brats is streaming exclusively on Hulu.
