Dog Vomiting Outbreak Surprises Vets

VETS have been left scratching their heads after discovering a new sickness outbreak in areas across Cumbria.

Belle Vue Vets in Wigton have treated a number of dogs with sickness and diarrhoea symptoms, but have been left surprised that usual treatments have not had the expected responses.

The veterinary practice decided to warn dog owners about the outbreak, which has varying symptoms.

Symptoms also include lethargy and a lack of appetite.

Caroline Jahnsdorf, veterinary surgeon at Belle Vue vets, said: "The first case was about three or four weeks ago.

"It peaked around Thursby where a few dogs came in with sickness and diarrhoea.

"They didn't seem to respond in the normal way. Normally we give treatment and they get better, but these dogs just weren't getting better around the county.

"They get better and then have a relapse.

"They are getting better but it's just taking a bit of time to get over it.

"It is a little unusual, it is not following the same pattern."

Mrs Jahnsdorf is now offering advice to all dog owners to limit the chances of the illness spreading.

"You should try and limit exposure, particularly at large exhibitions or events.

"Pick up your dog mess and avoid contact with other dogs."

She said anyone with concerns should contact their vet.

On average the vets is treating two dogs a day, which compares to the usual average of one or two a week.

"You just need to be aware of it," continued Mrs Jahnsdorf. "If your dog comes in from a walk not quite right that they make sure to contact your vet."

Cases have appeared from dog owners in Aspatria, Wigton, Carlisle and Thursby.

Samples from the Wigton practice are now being sent to The Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET), who are studying the illness at the University of Liverpool.

They are investigating reports of acute onset prolific vomiting (five or more episodes in a 12-hour period) in dogs in various parts of the UK.

Belle Vue vets is issuing advice:

  • Avoid walking in public parks to limit contact between dogs both affected and unaffected;
  • Pick up your dog's poop, wash your hands, and clean any toys, food and water bowls.
  • To help treat your dog they recommend:

  • Bland food – Little and often with small meals of chicken/white fish and rice;
  • Probiotics – To help firm your dog's stools up. We can dispense you 'Yudigest' for up to three days;
  • Keep hydrated – offer fresh water, soak any kibble in water to encourage water intake.

Rihanna The Dog Vomit Rock Star

From the police report detailing Chris Brown's assault on his then-girlfriend, Rihanna (real name: Robyn Rihanna Fenty), according to MTV News:

"A verbal argument ensued and Brown pulled the vehicle over on an unknown street, reached over Robyn F. With his right hand, opened the car door and attempted to force her out. Brown was unable to force Robyn F. Out of the vehicle because she was wearing a seat belt. When he could not force her to exit, he took his right hand and shoved her head against he passenger window of the vehicle, causing an approximate one-inch raised circular contusion.

"Robyn F. Turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.'s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.

"Brown looked at Robyn F. And stated, 'I'm going to beat the sh– out of you when we get home! You wait and see!' "

The detective said "Robyn F." then used her cell phone to call her personal assistant Jennifer Rosales, who did not answer.

"Robyn F. Pretended to talk to her and stated, 'I'm on my way home. Make sure the police are there when I get there.'

"After Robyn F. Faked the call, Brown looked at her and stated, 'You just did the stupidest thing ever! Now I'm really going to kill you!'

"Brown resumed punching Robyn F. And she interlocked her fingers behind her head and brought her elbows forward to protect her face. She then bent over at the waist, placing her elbows and face near her lap in [an] attempt to protect her face and head from the barrage of punches being levied upon her by Brown.

"Brown continued to punch Robyn F. On her left arm and hand, causing her to suffer a contusion on her left triceps (sic) that was approximately two inches in diameter and numerous contusions on her left hand.

"Robyn F. Then attempted to send a text message to her other personal assistant, Melissa Ford. Brown snatched the cellular telephone out of her hand and threw it out of the window onto an unknown street.

"Brown continued driving and Robyn F. Observed his cellular telephone sitting in his lap. She picked up the cellular telephone with her left hand and before she could make a call he placed her in a head lock with his right hand and continued to drive the vehicle with his left hand.

"Brown pulled Robyn F. Close to him and bit her on her left ear. She was able to feel the vehicle swerving from right to left as Brown sped away. He stopped the vehicle in front of 333 North June Street and Robyn F. Turned off the car, removed the key from the ignition and sat on it.

"Brown did not know what she did with the key and began punching her in the face and arms. He then placed her in a head lock positioning the front of her throat between his bicep and forearm. Brown began applying pressure to Robyn F.'s left and right carotid arteries, causing her to be unable to breathe and she began to lose consciousness.

"She reached up with her left hand and began attempting to gouge his eyes in an attempt to free herself. Brown bit her left ring and middle fingers and then released her. While Brown continued to punch her, she turned around and placed her back against the passenger door. She brought her knees to her chest, placed her feet against Brown's body and began pushing him away. Brown continued to punch her on the legs and feet, causing several contusions.

"Robyn F. Began screaming for help and Brown exited the vehicle and walked away. A resident in the neighborhood heard Robyn F.'s plea for help and called 911, causing a police response. An investigation was conducted and Robyn F. Was issued a Domestic Violence Emergency Protective Order."

Here's what her face looked like when Brown got through with the singer.

But that was 2009. This is now:

Rihanna has opened up like never before about getting back together with her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown, and what it means for her public image. "I decided it was more important for me to be happy," she tells contributing editor Josh Eells in the new issue of Rolling Stone, out Friday, January 31st. "I wasn't going to let anybody's opinion get in the way of that. Even if it's a mistake, it's my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I'd rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it."

Meanwhile, Chris Brown this week allegedly punched pop singer Frank Ocean over a parking spot.

Gardener Fined $750 After Pulling Over Into A No Stopping Zone For 'one Minute' To Let His Dog Out To Be Sick

A tradie has copped a $750 fine after doing something almost anyone would do - showing kindness to a sick animal.

Gardener Ori Weiser was driving in the Cottesloe beach area of Perth when he noticed his dog seemed very unwell, so he pulled over to let it out.

It was in a no stop zone, but it was just for one minute to let the sick dog vomit on the grass while he remained within eyesight of his car.

Mr Weiser pulled into a 'near empty' part of a carpark, between two empty disabled bays, opposite Cottesloe General Store to let his pet be sick.

'It took no more than one minute,' he told the Post newspaper.

But as he walked back to his car, the gardener saw a council parking ranger was watching and taking notes.

'I asked him what he was doing, and he said he was writing me a $500 citation for blocking a disabled parking spot,' Mr Weiser said.

He told the ranger he had only pulled in there as his pet was sick, but claims the official replied that he didn't care, then walked back to his colleague and laughed.

While Mr Weiser phoned the council and spoke with what he thought was the ranger's 'apologetic' boss, he was then handed another $250 fine for blocking traffic.

Furious with what had happened, he then drove to the council office, where he was told he would have to start an appeal process as the citation couldn't be cancelled.

Mr Weiser hoped that by lodging his appeal the council might use some 'common sense' and tear up the fine, but that hasn't happened.

'It's just spineless behaviour, and very unnecessary,' he told Perth Now.

'For small and struggling trade businesses, $750 is a big hit and can really impact us.'

Mr Weiser said he understands there have to be rules and regulations, 'but there's also humanity and kindness'.

'Especially in an already very rich suburb... The punishment doesn't add up with the action.'

Cottesloe's parking inspectors are reportedly expected to issue $1.34million in fines this year, having already accrued $1million since January.

The council said Mr Weiser's fine was for parking in one of its disabled bays, known as ACROD.

A spokesperson told the Post that 'Mr Weiser's vehicle ... Was partly in the bay which obstructed it from being able to be used by a permit holder'.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the Town of Cottesloe Council for further comment.
