Go Behind The Scenes Of The Bison Roundup At Tallgrass Prairie Preserve
Ranch hands and members of The Nature Conservancy gathered early last Sunday at the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve for the 31st bison roundup.
The annual event helps control diseases in the bison population and identifies surplus animals born in the herd. The bison get blood drawn, receive vaccinations and get their weight documented. Some excess bison are donated to the InterTribal Buffalo Council to be reintroduced on tribal lands; others may be sold.

Daniel Shular, Tulsa World"I've been around cattle operations my whole life, and the bison are different," said Harvey Payne, community relations coordinator with The Nature Conservancy. "They accumulate stress — they didn't evolve going through a set of corrals; they don't like anything about it.
"So we put them through a working chute. We try to have them in that chute for less than a minute," Payne said about processing 300 to 500 bison a day before they are released into a 1,400-acre pasture.
The processing stage of the roundup at the Mary L. Pasture takes about a week, but the earlier stages involve getting the bison to the pasture from the nearly 40,000-acre preserve with siren-equipped feed trucks starting in late September or early October.
"We've learned something every year. The bison are very intelligent, and a lot of times it's a cat-and-mouse game," Payne said about the roundup experience.

The U.S. Department of the Interior on Saturday informed social-media followers that National Bison Day is a time to "celebrate this majestic symbol of strength and resilience."
With that in mind, below is an extraordinary clip that showcases the strength of one adult male bison – and resilience of another – as it clears its rival from a highway by knocking him briefly airborne. (Keep in mind that adult male bison can weigh 2,000 pounds.)
The footage, captured during mating season through a vehicle window, was shared by Yellowstone National Park in 2020, along with the warning: "Remember to always keep your distance — 25 yards from bison and elk; 100 yards from all other wildlife."

While commemorating National Bison Day, the U.S. Department of the Interior boasted that, in a collaborative effort with tribes and states, the agency manages 11,000 bison in 19 herds across 12 states. (Yellowstone is home to nearly 5,000 bison.)
The department continued: "This magnificent animal joins the ranks of the bald eagle as the official symbol of our country — and much like the eagle, it's a symbol of our American identity and one of the greatest conservation success stories of all time."
The department concluded with its own humorous warning to tourists, alluding to the unpredictability of massive animals that are not always as docile as they appear to be: "And as a reminder: Don't pet the fluffy cow."
Fruits Of Labor Power Bison To First Home Win
The Bloomington Bison secured a victory over the Kalamazoo Wings with a score of 3-1 on Friday night, marking their first win at Grossinger Motors Arena this season.
Sahil Panwar initiated the scoring with a power-play goal late in the first period. Blake McLaughlin netted his first of two goals toward the end of the second period, followed by his second goal—as well as Bloomington's third—an empty-netter with just over one minute left in regulation.
Goaltender Mark Sinclair, in his seventh appearance of the season, made 21 saves on 22 shots and earned his third win.
The Bison's power play had faced challenges earlier in the season, converting only 2 of 27 opportunities (7.4%), one of the lowest rates in the ECHL.
Nevertheless, the team continued to fine-tune their strategies, and recent personnel changes on the power play paid off immediately.
On their first power-play opportunity of the game, defenseman Case McCarthy charged into the offensive zone but lost control of the puck before Kalamazoo goaltender Jonathan Lemieux poked it away.
However, Panwar, who registered four shots on goal, quickly regained possession and unleashed a shot that seemed to catch Lemieux by surprise, finding the back of the net.
The Wings' goaltending duo had allowed only six goals in five games leading up to Friday's matchup. The Bison knew it would be a significant challenge to light the lamp.
Much of the team's strategy focused on creating traffic in front of their goaltenders to disrupt their performance.
McLaughlin's first goal was a result of two Bison players positioning themselves in the low slot, allowing him to take a shot from the top of the slot while Lemieux was heavily screened, which resulted in the puck finding the net.
Bloomington will try to complete the weekend sweep with a visit to Iowa against the Heartlanders on Saturday night.
