Husky Puppy Dies After Rescue, Vaccinations Came Too Late Says Rescuer

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — One of three puppies rescued after an owner allegedly released the dogs onto the street died from canine parvovirus on March 4, 2025. The four-month-old puppies were found abandoned near abandoned near Eastern Avenue and Interstate 11.

Lisa Plant, who picked the puppies up, said she had returned the same dogs a few days prior when she saw them running on the street.

"I was really upset. Because I knew exactly where they came from. It was my neighbor's house," said Plant, who was preparing her home for a move. "She's like, 'Oh, no, no, no' And I said, 'What do you mean, this is your dog? They're out again,'" said Plant. "'She goes, 'No, no, no, I don't want them. Take them. They're free we don't want them anymore.'"

According to Brannon Collins, who was temporarily fostering the puppy alongside his sister, noticed husky puppy Echo feeling unwell and took him to the veterinarian for treatment. It was there he discovered that Echo had contracted the contagious disease. Unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated puppies are among the most susceptible to canine parvovirus.

On the veterinarian visit before the diagnosis, the puppies were given their first set of vaccines, said Collins. The temporary foster said he had been fundraising money for the second set of vaccines, totaling about $600. The first set was covered by nonprofit Wagging Tails Rescue. Before the symptoms arose on Feb. 27, Collins said he and the veterinarian believed the puppies were in good health. They were active and showed no signs of illness, said Collins.

"The [previous owner] didn't take care of them before," said Collins, who believes the late vaccinations played a role in Echo's death. "It sucks because Echo has a potential adopter and then this happened."

When News 3 approached the family that Plant said released the puppies, they said there did not own or have any involvement with husky puppies. Neighbors and people experiencing homelessness in the area said they do not recall husky puppies in the neighborhood. Plant and Collins said they were planning on reporting the family to City of Las Vegas Animal Protection Services.

Echo's sister, Vail, is still up for adoption, said Collins. The third puppy has already found a home, said Plant.
