Donate to help a litter of sick Colorado puppies! - KKTV 11 News

Image
PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is calling on dog lovers to help a litter of sick puppies. Sally, Sam, Skyler, Shayne, Shannen, Shay, Schuyler and Shelby were living as strays in Pueblo until their rescue Monday. They're now safe at the shelter with a roof over their heads and regular meals -- but are also suffering from the potentially-lethal parvovirus. "When we received them, there were nine," said Kate Aviv with HSPPR. "We realized they were infected with parvo. Unfortunately, one was not responsive, and we did have to humanely euthanize it. So now we’re just trying to raise funds to get care for the other eight that they need." Parvo is a gastrointestinal virus that affects puppies and young dogs, and can be deadly without treatment. Unfortunately, treatment comes with a hefty price. "It actually costs anywhere from $300-$1,200 to treat a single puppy for parvo," Avis said. HSPPR set a "modest" f...

All of Wolcott Cove is included in the closure. Officials indicate the high bacteria count in samples collected on July 24th could lead to gastroenteritis. Official recalls of commercial...

Does Cannabis Interact with the Gut Microbiome? - News-Medical.net

Image
As more and more countries legalize Cannabis sp. for medicinal and recreational use, research studies continue to explore and validate its potential therapeutic effects. An example of this is the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. The anecdotal evidence of the efficacy of cannabis in various gastrointestinal disorders has been corroborated by the discovery of endogenous cannabinoids, receptors, and synthetic and degradative enzymes in the gut. Collectively these comprise the endocannabinoid system, whose functions include the control of tissue homeostasis, intestinal motor and sensory activity, hunger and nausea signaling, and integrity of the epithelial barrier function. Subsequently, the use of various cannabinoid-derived pharmacological substances, such as cannabis, to treat gut-related pathologies is plausible. Underpinning these functions is a dynamic interaction with the gut microbiome. Several papers have now demonstrated a link between the gut microbiome, the endocanna...

Both areas have been temporarily closed to commercial and recreational shellfishing because health officials found high bacteria counts in water samples collected last week.
