Petco Pet Insurance Review And Pricing (2024)

Our Thoughts on Petco Pet Insurance

Petco by Nationwide is a partnership that allows Petco customers to buy a pet insurance policy issued through a major insurer. Pet owners in every state can buy accident-only and accident-and-illness policies. Reimbursement rates range from 50% to 90%, and reimbursement options are limited to $5,000 or unlimited — although specific options may depend on where you live.

Petco by Nationwide has a narrower selection of coverage than some competitors. You can only choose between two upper coverage limit options, but the plans are budget-friendly — especially for a Nationwide unlimited coverage option. Petco by Nationwide is also one of the few providers that insures exotic pets.

Pet parents should note a few details before enrolling in coverage. Petco by Nationwide excludes coverage for pet behavioral issues and chiropractic care. It also does not make sample contracts available during the buying process, which is something that can help pet owners make more informed decisions before picking a provider.

Our team rated Petco pet insurance 4.5 out of 5 stars and ranked it as the most experienced insurance provider for understanding pet illnesses and conditions.

    Pros and Cons

    Pros

Covers birds, snakes and other exotic animals

Has accident-only and accident-and-illness plans available and can customize accident-and-illness limits

    Can add unlimited annual benefits

    Cons

Only two coverage limit options: $5,000 and unlimited

Less inclusive policies don't cover items like alternative therapies and behavioral problems

Limited reviews related to Petco and Nationwide's partnership claims process

How Petco Scored in Our Methodology

Petco scored 4.5 out of 5 stars based on our provider rating methodology. The company earned the most points for coverage, covered treatments and availability but lost points for its industry standing.

Our team reached out to Petco for comment on its lower ratings, notably in the company reputation category, but did not receive a response.

    Petco Plans and Pricing

Petco is able to offer pet insurance policies with attractive rates by partnering with major insurance provider Nationwide. Getting pricing for Petco's policies should be easy for most users, though you'll need to call to get a quote for exotic animal coverage. While you can access coverage directly through Petco's site, you'll be redirected to Nationwide's website to get a price quote.

You'll start by entering your location, contact information, pet's age and health details. Most pet owners will be able to complete the quote process in 30 seconds or less. From there, you can toggle through coverage options and explore how changing your deductible, annual limits and other plan details can change your annual pricing estimates.

How Much Does Petco Pet Insurance Cost?

Petco pet insurance coverage starts at $16 per month for dogs and $9 per month for cats. In our team's review, we found that the average dog insurance policy costs $66 per month and the average price for cats is around $32 per month.

Plan Accident and Illness Coverage Accident-Only Coverage Average Cost $35 $22 Summary An all-inclusive accident and illness plan is available for pets under 8 years of age. Removes all covered treatments for illnesses; accident-only coverage is the only option for pets over 8.

*Average pricing was collected by averaging quotes for the four animal profiles outlined in our pet insurance methodology below. Quotes were collected on 2/29/2024 directly from the insurance provider's website using a sample address in Pennsylvania.

    MARKETWATCH GUIDES TIP

While Petco's policies are below the national average prices of $66 for dogs and $32 for cats, policies don't include as much coverage as most competitors.

What Does Petco Pet Insurance Cover?

Petco offers one accident-and-illness policy, which is underwritten by Nationwide Insurance Company. Base coverages include everything listed in the accident-and-illness plan — if your pet is younger than eight years old, you have the option to opt out of illness insurance. Pets older than eight can only receive accident-only coverage.

    Accident and Illness Plan

Petco's accident-and-illness plan, underwritten and issued through Nationwide, includes all necessary medical services for the following conditions. It covers everything from prescription medications to hospitalization and scans like X-rays and MRIs.

  • Animal attacks
  • Broken bones
  • Foreign body ingestion
  • Heat stroke
  • Hit by car
  • Lacerations
  • Oral trauma
  • Poisoning
  • The policy includes all inpatient and outpatient medical services to treat an illness that develops over time. Examples of conditions your policy covers include:

  • Allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Bladder infections
  • Cancer (including lymphoma)
  • Diarrhea
  • Ear infections
  • Heart disease
  • Skin infections
  • Vomiting
  • Petco's policies, reimbursements and terms are the same for accident-and-illness and accident-only policies. The only difference is the services covered. Policies do not include coverage for any pre-existing conditions, behavioral conditions, alternative therapies or prescription pet food.

    Preventative Care Plan

Petco offers one preventative care plan option that includes two financial caps: $450 and $800. Both plans have the same range of benefits but vary in the upper coverage limit included with each item. Limits and inclusions on both coverage options include:

    Services Covered $450 Annual Benefit $800 Annual Benefit + $28 per month + $53 per month Physical exam (2 per term, $40 per exam) $80 $80 Vaccination or titer  $80 $80 Heartworm or FeLV/FIV test $35 $35 Fecal test $30 $30 Deworming $25 $25 Microchip $50 $50 Health certificate $50 $50 Flea control or heartworm prevention  $100 $100 Your choice of the following extra item: health screen (blood test), radiograph (X-rays) or EKG N/A $100 Spay/neuter/dental N/A $250 Petco's Optional Add-on Coverage

Petco only offers one optional coverage — illness benefits that you can switch on and off when buying coverage. This option is available for all pets younger than 8 years old. It allows you to add either $5,000 or unlimited coverage for veterinary expenses that stem from illnesses that develop over time. Terms on illness coverage are the same as accident coverage.

    Customizable Coverage Levels

Petco's policies offer fewer customization options and lower coverage reimbursements than most competitors. This rigidity can make Petco a less competitive option if you desire extensive protections against high veterinary bills or more customizable terms.

    Deductible Options

Petco's policies include three deductible options: $100, $250 or $500. You can apply each deductible to either policy, and you can combine options with any reimbursement level.

We requested a quote for a 5-year-old male mixed breed dog and adjusted deductible levels to see how they affected pricing. These are the quotes we received.

    $100 deductible $250 deductible $500 deductible Accident And Illness $64 $57 $47 Accident-only $20 $17 $15

*Quotes listed above were collected using sample policies with $5,000 coverage limits and a 70% reimbursement rate. We collected quotes on 3/1/2024 for a sample pet living in Pennsylvania.

    Reimbursement Rates

Petco has three reimbursement rate options: 50%, 70% and 80%, although some states have a 90% option available. Overall, these are lower than most pet insurance companies, which offer reimbursement ranges between 70% and 90%. However, pet owners looking for more affordable rates may enjoy Petco's 50% option.

Our table summarizes how changing your reimbursement percentage affects pricing in policies for a 5-year-old male mixed-breed dog.

    50% Reimbursement 70% Reimbursement 80% Reimbursement Accident and illness $41 $57 $64 Accident-only $13 $17 $20

*Quotes listed above were collected using sample policies with $5,000 coverage limits and a $250 deductible. We collected quotes on 3/1/2024 for a sample pet living in Pennsylvania.

    Annual Limit Options

Petco's policies include two upper-coverage limits: $5,000 and unlimited, which you can choose for either policy type. Illness policies that include $5,000 coverage also come with an extra $5,000 toward hereditary and congenital conditions.

We requested a quote for a 5-year-old male mixed-breed dog to see how annual limit choices affect pricing. The table below summarizes what we found when we asked for quotes with a 70% reimbursement rate and a $250 deductible.

    $5,000 Unlimited Accident-and-illness $57 $60 Accident-only $17 $18

*We collected quotes on 3/1/2024 for a sample pet living in Pennsylvania.

Signup, Claims Filing and Payout Processes

The process of enrolling and filing a claim with Petco is straightforward. After starting to fill out a quote, you'll be redirected to a Nationwide insurance information page to learn more about coverage. If you submit details for a cat or dog insurance quote, you'll be able to compare coverage options. If you request a quote for another type of animal, you'll need to call to get a quote for coverage.

After entering information on your pet's age, breed and gender, you'll be able to experiment with coverage and pricing options. Petco's basic coverage is a $5,000 accident-only policy, but you can add unlimited coverage for illnesses as well. You can also choose unlimited coverage for illnesses and $5,000 for accidents and vice versa.

If you request a quote for a pet age eight or older, you'll only receive the option to purchase accident coverage.

Click through to explore two tiers of wellness coverage and enroll. The process of getting a quote, viewing pricing and paying your first premium takes about five minutes for dogs and cats, with coverage inclusions clearly laid out.

Like most other pet insurance companies, Petco by Nationwide works on a reimbursement-based model. You will pay your vet bill directly when it's due, usually at the time of service. You will then request a copy of the bill and upload it to Nationwide's online pet insurance claims portal.

A representative will look at your claim. If approved, you'll receive a reimbursement issued directly to your bank account. You can also elect to receive a reimbursement check in the mail.

Customer reviews of Nationwide's reimbursement process are overall positive, but a few customers complain of delayed payments. Nationwide does not currently support the option to pay your veterinarian directly, a feature the company could expand to better serve pet owners in the future.

Petco's Waiting Periods and Age Restrictions

Petco's policies have limitations issued by Nationwide, including:

  • Minimum and maximum age issues: Pets must be at least eight weeks old to enroll as a new pet. They must be younger than eight years old to qualify for accident-and-illness coverage. Older pets may qualify only for major medical coverage.
  • Waiting periods: A 14-day waiting period applies to all new policy issues, so you can't file a claim until two weeks after the date when you enroll your pet.
  • The two-week waiting period is competitive with other pet insurance providers in the industry. For example, competitor Spot Pet Insurance has the same waiting period before you're eligible to file for accident or illness veterinary care bill reimbursement. However, some policy providers offer shorter waiting periods for accident coverage. Lemonade, for example, offers no waiting period accident insurance.

What Customers Think About Petco Pet Insurance

While there are few third-party reviews of Petco-specific pet insurance coverage, these policies are issued through major insurance provider Nationwide. Let's take a look at a few reviews of what customers said they liked (and didn't like) about Nationwide pet coverage.

    What Customers Like

Many customers who purchased a policy through Nationwide reported a positive experience, noting their satisfaction with the payment and processing teams.

  • Accurate payments: Of the customers who reported positive experiences with Nationwide coverage, the most common compliment was easy reimbursements. Multiple customers reported Nationwide was there in their time of need, paying a high percentage of the vet bill.
  • Great customer service: Many reviewers praised Nationwide's customer service team, which users reported as knowledgeable, well-trained and able to handle most questions or complaints efficiently.
  • Easy to use wellness benefits: Customers who invested in wellness benefits through Nationwide reported they were easily able to use benefits for vaccinations and physical appointments.
  • Budget-friendly prices: Many Nationwide customers were happy with the rates quoted to them, praising the company's competitive pricing.
  • What Customers Don't Like

Similar to other pet insurance companies, many pet owners said Nationwide denied claims and delayed payments after filing, leading to a frustrating experience.

  • Insufficient payments: The most common complaint about Nationwide pet insurance was insufficient claims payouts. While many pet owners reported Nationwide paid according to their plan, others said they paid their premiums only to receive a partial refund on their vet bill that did not equal their complete payout rate. One customer claimed to have consistently received reimbursements of about 25% of their vet bill, negating the value of policies.
  • Rejected claims: Another common complaint about Nationwide's policies was rejected claims. Customers regularly expressed frustration with denied claims, with many saying they submitted for an item defined as covered under their policy.
  • Delayed claims processing: While Nationwide said it processes most claims in two weeks, some customers expressed frustration with longer wait times. Select reviewers said they waited more than 30 days for a response from the company.
  • Premium increases: Many customers complained that after enrolling in Nationwide coverage, premiums increased significantly from one year to the next.
  • Our team reached out to Petco and Nationwide regarding the above-listed negative reviews but did not receive a response.

Petco Pet Insurance vs. The Market

Here's how Petco compares to other pet insurance providers based on our research.

    Petco vs. Lemonade

Our top choice for affordable pet insurance, Lemonade's average premium is about $23, which is even less than Petco's average. Lemonade also has reimbursement limits that start at 70% — 20% higher than Petco's minimum reimbursement percentage.

Like Petco's, Lemonade's policies are limited. For example, policies don't include standardized coverage for alternative therapies or behavioral conditions. However, with Lemonade you have the option to add these coverages for another monthly premium. This flexibility helps if you're looking to blend affordable premiums with a bit more coverage for select items.

    Petco Lemonade Reimbursements 50% – 90% 70% – 90% Deductibles $100 – $500 $100 – $500 Annual Limits $5,000 – unlimited $5,000 – $100,000 Average Cost for Dogs $48 per month $30 per month Average Cost for Cats $15 per month $16 per month

    Petco vs. Spot Pet Insurance

If you're a pet owner looking for more inclusive coverage, Spot Pet Insurance is worth a look. Like Petco, Spot offers the option to add unlimited coverage for each of your pets. Spot also offers the option to add up to 90% reimbursement for veterinary bills, and coverage starts at 70% reimbursement. These rates mean that if you incur a major medical expense for your pet, you'll be responsible for a smaller percentage of your bill.

Spot's insurance policies also include more protections than Petco's policies. For example, coverage includes reimbursements for behavioral issues like biting and separation anxiety as standard protections. However, Spot's policies are significantly more expensive than Petco's, which can make it a better choice for pet owners who think they might need to use more coverage.

    Petco Spot Pet Insurance Reimbursements 50% – 80% 70% – 90% Deductibles $100 – $500 $100 – $1,000 Annual Limits $5,000 – unlimited $2,500 – unlimited  Average Cost for Dogs $48 per month $75 per month Average Cost for Cats $15 per month $34 per month

Methodology: Our System for Ranking Pet Insurance Companies

We review each pet insurance company based on factors most important to pet parents like you. Our process includes in-depth industry research into each provider, such as comparing coverage options, gathering quotes online to determine pricing and reading reviews to assess customer service. To better inform our reviews, we've surveyed 3,000 dog and cat owners nationwide to determine the most important elements of pet insurance coverage. We've also bought pet insurance plans for 10 of our team's pets to test the customer experience of various providers for ourselves.

We then score each provider on a 100-point scale and calculate an overall rating out of five stars. Here are more details about the factors we consider when reviewing pet insurance providers:

  • Costs and Discounts (22.5%): To assess pricing, we collected sample quotes for 10 mixed-breed and purebred dogs and cats, ranging from 3 months to 8 years old. Our team collected a total of 17,330 quotes directly from 22 provider's websites, requesting at least two quotes for all 50 U.S. States from every insurer and pet profile. Providers earn the most points in this category for offering affordable coverage and more than four discount options to customers.
  • Coverage (22.5%): The best pet insurance companies offer a range of plans, customization options and more so pet owners can choose the right coverage. Companies offering a wide variety of coverage options earn full points in this category. We also look at waiting periods and award the most points if companies offer policies with shorter waiting periods than its competitors.
  • Covered Treatments (17.5%): According to our survey of pet owners, coverage is one of the most important factors when shopping for pet insurance. Companies with a breadth of included treatments and unique coverages as standard within their policies receive more points in this category than those with less options.
  • Customer Experience (17.5%): Respondents to our survey also valued customer service when comparing pet insurance providers. We score each company based on its website accessibility and overall usability, customer service, mobile apps, money-back guarantees and veterinarian telehealth options. The insurers with the most customer experience offerings receive the most points.
  • Industry Standing (10%): We review up-to-date ratings and accreditation information from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot, and score companies based on customer reviews and years of industry experience.
  • Availability (10%): Some companies do not offer policies for pets over a certain age. For this category, we deduct points from providers that have age limits for older pets. We also consider state availability, international coverage and if a company extends coverage options to breeds considered dangerous.
  • We use our rating system to compare each company we review and determine the best pet insurance companies in the industry. To learn more, read our full pet insurance methodology to see how we review and score providers.
